Portovenere is a village perched on cliffs overlooking the sea, a place that seems to have stood still in time. To the east stretches the Gulf of La Spezia, but to the west you meet on the horizon only the sky and the open sea.
A hidden jewel of Liguria, a fishing village with an ancient history and timeless beauty. It features narrow streets and colorful terraced houses along the sea that climb up the hillside, the castle and the church of San Pietro at the tip offering a spectacular view of the bay of Portovenere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto.
But as we climb the hill between the dry stone walls dividing the olive trees, all noises gradually become muffled until they are lost in the distance.
It is here that Francesca has decided to live with her family and where 'Terre di Portovenere' was born, hectares of land restored to their original vocation with the terraced cultivations typical of Liguria and stone farmhouses that retain their rural characteristics.
We produce cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, we collect eggs from our hens and honey from our bees, and our vegetable garden offers fresh vegetables throughout the year thanks to the mild climate and favourable exposure to the sun.
A nature to be experienced by completely immersing oneself in it and experiencing what surrounds us: touching, smelling, listening, tasting what it offers.
Born Venetians with the mountains in our hearts, we found our place in Portovenere, at this extreme edge of Liguria on the border with Tuscany, because here the mountains meet the sea.
In the heart of an extraordinary system of parks (2 national parks and 5 regional parks), we fell in love with this place, its light, its traditions, and we decided, deviating from paths that seemed already written, to dedicate ourselves to "Terre di Portovenere", a dream that became a project and a lifestyle shared by our daughters, lovers of travel, nature, and every outdoor sport.
The houses of 'Terre di Portovenere' are located along the Portovenere Park's path 519, which offers an enchanting view of the Apennines, Porto Venere and Palmaria Island.
Starting from Portovenere, the path is uphill, passable by trained hikers. Comfortable clothing with hiking shoes and luggage is mandatory..
You can decide to descend from Monte Muzzerone or ascend from Portovenere, the distance is the same.
If you arrive by public transport without your own car, it is preferable to ascend from Portovenere, while by car you can decide to leave your vehicle on Monte Muzzerone (unattended car park) or at Portovenere (where, in high season, there are only pay car parks).
From La Spezia, follow the signs for Portovenere, past Marola, Cadimare and Fezzano. Once at Grazie, follow the signs for the 'Palestra Rocciatori', taking a road on the right.
When you come to a fork in the road, take the straight dirt road downhill until you come to an orange emergency call box. Park your car in the adjacent space and then continue along the path AV5T (Alta Via 5 Terre) towards Portovenere.
In less than 10 minutes you will reach Rifugio Muzzerone, pass it by following path 519 towards Portovenere. After a further 10 minutes you will meet the sign of "The house above the castle”.
From La Spezia follow the signs for Portovenere. In Portovenere, the parking spaces available are those outside the historic centre in the paid parking spaces, delimited by the blue stripes, at the roadside.
From the first Saturday in March to the penultimate Sunday in October, all parking spaces are all metered from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. while at other times of the year in areas further away from the centre parking is free.
The path climbs from the right side of Bastreri Square (near the public baths) and climbs towards the Muzzerone refuge.
Once you arrive in Portovenere, head to Piazza Bastreri, the main square at the entrance of the historic center. It’s easy to recognize thanks to the old town gate and the castle visible above.
From Piazza Bastreri, take Via Giovanni Capellini, the narrow pedestrian street that runs through the heart of the village. It’s the main street, lined with tall colorful houses, artisan shops, and cozy restaurants.
Just a few meters in, on your left, you’ll find number 3: this is where “La Casa nella Torre” is located — a charming historic home set inside one of Portovenere’s ancient towers, still preserving its original character.
The location is perfect for exploring: you're right in the heart of the village, just steps away from the sea, the castle, and the beautiful Church of San Pietro.

The way up from the village is easiest with hiking boots and a backpack. If you make the effort, you’ll see beautiful sunrises over the mountains, enjoy a stunning view, and hear the sound of church bells carried up by the wind. A Wonderful Stay in a Truly Special Place We loved our stay here so much that we came back for a second time, and we’ll definitely be returning again. The place has a certain magic about it. The views are stunning, the hiking is fantastic, and the apartment is beautifully decorated. Francesca and Roberto’s hospitality really stood out—they run this agritourism with so much care and passion. Staying here gave us the chance to slow down and reflect on what really matters, all while surrounded by a beautiful and peaceful environment. Even carrying groceries up from Porto Venere became a moment to appreciate the simplicity of life. This is truly a special place that keeps pulling us back. We’re grateful for the time we spent with Francesca, who made our stay even more enjoyable. There’s nothing we missed during our stay—in fact, we’re leaving feeling blessed, refreshed and recharged. The vibes: Your own farmhouse oasis, with honestly, the best views and instant peace when you’re sitting on the balcony overlooking the sea and Palmaria island. Lots of privacy and space, which was lovely after travelling around various cities. The little touches: Francesca provided home grown veggies and herbs (which we definitely appreciated after two weeks of intense carb loading) Who knew an eggplant could taste so good. She was a response host who had excellent suggestions and checked in with us during our stay. The daily exercise: The ascent up from Porto Venere is no joke (though granted, we were doing it in 34 degree weather which made the cold sparkling water dispenser indispensable!). It’s about a 150m ascent up from Porto Venere. The free parcheggio Muzzerone is a better walk, but just note there’s a few impressive potholes on the road there. A delightful stay for the end of our trip. Would recommend if you love getting away from the crowds, and enjoying beautiful, peaceful spaces. We simply loved everything about it: the location on the hill, the view to the sea, the Palmaria island and the mountains, the garden, the way the house has been renovated so beautifully and traditionally. The hike up the hill is definitely something one should be prepared to with a pair of good hiking shoes and a backpack. Francesca and Roberto were always extremely friendly and helpful and you can really feel how they have put their hearts to this project.
